Richard Hell

Happy New Year, if it's still all right to say that.
I have been listening to quite a lot ("quite a lot" - not very committal is it) of Richard Hell in the first couple of weeks of the year. Made sense to me. And I wanted to paint him and listen while I painted. Music that is about confusion and failure is a lot better to paint to than Simply The Best – although having written that down it might be good to do a sort of Power Anthem triptych along with We Built This City and Footloose. Or a Tina Turner special. And see what it comes out like...
Anyway. Confusion and failure are still AOK with me and Richard Hell is also a great name and is sort of inspiration for the Superman name... except I think Hell is much better – but it was taken.
I think we're all still in the blank generation, quite frankly. Or are we post-blank? Fake-blank? Almost dead? Probably.
And here it is, a version of the Blank Gen sleeve. There was, yes, a plectrum next to the brushes so I included that. Next time I may paint with a plectrum and see what happens (it's not unlike a palette knife) although that actually sounds dreadful written down.
Or I might do another Bros painted with spoons.

Painted in acrylics on "Ampersand" archival art board, measures 13 x 20 cm. Any questions or for commissions, please use the contact page.

Return of the Art Mugs

Hey and hello - the mugs have arrived on this blustery, tornado-style day or days.
They're shiny, they're new and they are filled with an invisible magical dust. They're ready for something, don't know what - but if you're making one I'll have a strong tea no sugar. Thanks.
The mugs always say they're dishwasher-proof but I wouldn't gamble on that as they are sensitive, art mugs and automatic machine washing techniques might go wrong.
Here at Raw Art we love our mugs but they often sell out so do order soon to avoid disappointment.
Here are the five beauties. Watch this space for new designs - if we fancy it - in a couple of weeks....
All designs are from original Raw Art paintings.
Thank you, for being there.

This is the Aladdin Sane mug.

It's a Sleaford Mods mug! Wooh! Our favourite punks now immortalised on a beverage container.

Sorry this has now sold out

The Throbbing Gristle mug - a Raw Art classic.

Sorry this has now sold out

David Essex "Rock On" mug - good for people who love David Essex.

"Pup" Mug -
It's a Sex Pup mug - new for 2015! It's menacing but very good at holding hot drinks.

The underside of the mugs is printed with the Raw Art logo which is handy in itself.

Any questions, do ask.

Go Betweens - Liberty Belle Artwork

Hello scamps.
Here, on a blustery day, we have another new artwork to reveal... the suitably blustery jangles of Brissy's finest, the Go Betweens. Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express album cover. They're all sitting on a sofa. Some high, some low.
When will change come? Well, I don't know. But if you look at this artwork long enough – for a really really long time – things will change I am pretty sure of that.

On a sofa

On a wooden surface

On a plinth

If you would like this artwork it is 20 x 20 cm painted in acrylics on canvas board.

"Driving my first car, my elbow's in the breeze
With all these people that I never, never need
These people are excited by their cars..."

WEEK ONE – SANE VIBES

Welcome to the festive funwagon that is the Outsider Christmas Art Shop. This site has been brought to you by people who know that that art is not just for life, it's for Christmas.
While musing over a glass of chilled Churbo (Cava with a dash of Brandy) and a packet of ready salted crisps, the Insider Outsider Art Collective (incorporating the Art Supergroup) decided that what Christmas needs is a time for people to buy smaller, lighter, brighter, faster. Thus the mini Christmas for-a-limited-time-only (ie until January 2013) was created to bring to you joy and original works of art. Just like the John Lewis advert – unlike the John Lewis advert, Insider Christmas Outsiders are not selling you time travel romance, i-Pads, chocolates or duvet covers. We are selling tiny elements of the underground, the chaotic, the nervous, the brooding.
Over the next few weeks we will be adding more items so we would advise you to "follow by email" (see bottom of page) or just keep pressing "refresh" like an idiot at hourly intervals.
Or something.
Anyway. Happy bloody November. You haven't missed Christmas.

WEEK ONE – "SANE VIBES"

Two paintings meet, in life-size hand (hand, model's own).

Bad Vibes - Postcard Size (Sian Superman)
This is a version lite of the famous image, featuring Mr L Haines. It measures 18cm x13 cm or 7" x5" and is painted on canvas board. There are only ten available so order now, if you feel like it. As ever, these paintings are multiples – ie freshly painted and original each time, so tiny variations will occur. We are not robots. We have hands that do the work and brains with bells and whistles.

SORRY, NOW SOLD OUT
All Bad Vibes artwork can and will be signed on the back by Mr Haines himself.
Please note: If ordering outside Europe we cannot guarantee this item will arrive for December 25th.

Aladdin Sane - Postcard Size (Sian Superman)
Again, this measures 18cm x13 cm or 7" x5" and is painted on canvas board. Mr A Sane looks out onto the crumpled heap of humanity and wonders when the next rocket is landing. A lite version of the Aladdin Sane paintings sold earlier in 2012 – it features a different colourway (yellow and blue). Only ten available, painted as multiples, detailed above.

21st Century Man - On A Wall

Deep in the suburbs of modern Britain hangs a portrait so toothsome, so vibrant, that it needs little by way of explanation. It is the second 21st Century Man painting out of the limited edition of two.
It is placed on the fine magnolia wall of a gentleman who has seen fit to accompany said artwork with a mounted CD thing which gives the painting more strength, more guts.
Together they make a fine focal point for any contemporary living space.

Thank you.

21st Century Outsider Man - SOLD OUT

Hello and welcome to an instalment of the Life we call Paint and the Arts we call Outsider.
We at Insider Outsider Art, the we being I, thought that maybe we had painted some book covers but - gasp - no album covers of El Haines. And albums, well, that's also what he does. Music, man. For what is music but bulging grapes on the vine of humanity ready to be chomped at a moment's notice? Or at least made into wine.
Etc.
To make amends, the Superman Productions Workshop decided to paint an almost exact replica of the SPW's photograph of Mr Haines in the Hugo Ball-ish paper suit. This graced the cover of the 21st Century Man album which was available widely and loved broadly in the dusky nights of the latter part of 2009.

We see the lonely Mr Haines staring out, music stand by his side, into the dark recess of a century in turmoil. He emits, blankly, and stands for another five minutes.
In this solace, we notice contemplation and meditative numbness that has been previously denied to us on more vigorous album covers.

If you are totally sane and want to build up your collection of likeable artworks which are a great investment and look very hunky, then the Superman Production Workshops will paint just TWO of these (ie just one more) and sell them to you for the lowly price below.
Get in, before you leap out. Or similar.

NB Word has it the paypal button below is sometimes blocked with some browsers' adblock. Please consult your butler to try and unblock this to make a payment, if that at all makes sense. Or contact me direct via email or comments below.
THIS HAS NOW SOLD OUT

Thanks and good beans to you.

Post Everything Painting - ONLY ONE LEFT

News update - only ONE painting is left in this series of ten of Luke Haines' Post Everything book jacket. Get in quick, sirs or madam.
Original book jacket

You may be familiar with the Art Event of Summer 2009 - which wasn't the Royal Academy Summer exhibition oh no - but where the world of British Outsider Art was turned on its head with the sale of Bad Vibes multiple paintings. Many were bought, all were loved. Some were even displayed on walls, in homes, and probably provided excellent subject matter when the conversational ball was close to dropping like yer proverbial rock.
And so now, Summer of 2011, and the grand mass of Outsider Art and Haines and Superman fans have finished the new Haines memoir Post Everything and are twiddling their collective thumbs, wondering just how to fill in those awkward pauses in social situations without a new painting to incite discussion, ignite passion and formulate New Ways for Living.
Original painting commissioned for publishers William Heinemann

And so I am selling ten - and no more - multiples of the above image, each hand-painted lovingly onto pure, fresh canvas, based on the original painting commissioned by publishers William Heinemann. As you will note, it varies slightly from the published jacket in composition. The works will measure 30 x 40 cms and will be painted in acrylics. You may have missed out on the original Bad Vibes paintings, you may have seen your conversational ball with unwanted visitors plummet at regular intervals.
(example of the Bad Vibes painting)
You may even have felt morose and dead inside because you did not have a painting of your own. You may even have a Bad Vibes painting and want a loving little canvassy companion for it. Now, esteemed person, here is your chance.

Please choose correct posting option. One painting per person.
Thank you very much.

New *Painting* of a Hangover

The first hangover painting, rather than sketch, is here - like a beacon of portent on a Saturday night, speaking -like a ghoulish monster of dreary headpinchyness - of the ills of the Night After. That is, Sunday - and the Sunday hangover (which will actually go if you keep drinking all day until, preferably, Tuesday). But anyway, it is Saturday at the moment here in London town and here it is, this picture. If you would like to own this totally original piece of art, wot like no one has ever done before, it will cost you £80 plus very moderate p&p. [Acrylic on canvas, 30cms x 40cms.] You can contact me here for all enquiries. I'm off down the pub.

New Artwork

Hello, my name is Siân Superman and I am an outsider artist. Outsider art means pictures with no formal technique, no acceptable lineage, no shop-bought aesthetic. The wonderful Stella Vine, for instance, is an Outsider artist. Banksy is not. The paintings “by” Tony Hancock in the best film of all time The Rebel are Outsider Art. The stuff of Damien Hirst is not. It is important to be an Outsider. It stops you being an asshole. (Pablo Picasso was never called an asshole.)

And thus onto the subject of today.
You may have heard the work of a gentleman called Luke Haines, the notorious songwriter, with bands such as The Auteurs, Black Box Recorder, Baader Meinhof and of course, by his own nom de non-plume, Luke Haines. He is known throughout the world as a despot, a soothsayer, a perspicacious visionary. (By the way, I am married to this man.)

And so, as if pushed into a corner by a very large baboon, I have new paintings for sale, inspired by the cover of 'Bad Vibes', Haines’ memoir. The “dark destroyer” is portrayed here in all his brooding glory, with the heavy clouds of doom in the background and a martini in his hand. He glowers with knowing nihilism as the shutter clicks, and paintbrush flicks and a new artwork is borne. Therefore, here is picture 1:

Picture 2 features our fiery fiend as a disembodied head, one filled with menace and sarcasm – a gigantic two fingers [not pictured] to the world. “Bad Vibes” is also its name and such is its game. Here it is:

The paintings are in acrylic paint, on canvas, and measure 16" by 12".

Copies will be limited up to 40. Each one will be slightly different, not intentionally, but rather sensationally. (Outsiders have no truck with things being exactly the same.)

The paintings are £100 each and that includes UK postage & packing. Anywhere else in the world, please email for a postage price. Paypal works best. Click here to email.
